Growth of Wealth in the Country Thanks to Tourist GDP

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the domestic tourism product in 2018 was higher than the total increase in the economy (2.6%) compared to the previous year. This data signals tourism's structural role as one of Mexico's most resilient growth engines.

Tourism's Weight in the Mexican Economy

GDP represented at basic prices 8.7 percent of Mexico's gross domestic product. During 2018, tourism-related activities reported 2.3 million paid jobs, 6% of the total.

Other subsectors that gave employment in this industry were services related to accommodation, passenger transport services, craft services and recreational and sports services, among others.

Domestic and External Consumption

The internal consumption expenditure during this year was 3.2 billion pesos, while external consumption accounted for 272.8 million pesos. The Institute pointed out that tourism activity accounted for 3.4 percent of the fixed investment of the economy in 2018.

Sector Breakdown in 2019

In 2019, accommodation services accounted for 28.1 percent of the value, passenger transport services 18.7 percent and catering services accounted for 15.2 percent. The largest contribution within the tourism sector were the services of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, with a participation of 29.1 percent.

Domestic vs Foreign Traveler Growth

INEGI also shared that domestic consumption (domestic travelers) increased 3.3 percent and receptive consumption (foreign travelers) increased 2.8 percent.

In Summary

Tourism is more than a vacation industry in Mexico. It is a multi-sector wealth engine generating millions of jobs, attracting capital, and pushing GDP higher year after year. For real estate investors, this macro tailwind is one of the strongest signals that destinations like the Riviera Maya keep their long-term value.
