Holbox, an Unknown Paradise

There are many places in the Riviera Maya that fascinate us with their unparalleled beauty. Today we want to talk about one of them: Isla Holbox, an unknown paradise of peace and tranquility.

Where Holbox is and why it matters

Located in the state of Quintana Roo, Holbox is a small island in the northern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. An interesting fact: it is part of an area called “Yum Balam”, one of the most important ecological reserves of the Yucatán Peninsula.

The island stretches 43 kilometers in total. The most popular way to tour it is by golf cart or bicycle, since the roads are not paved — you walk on sand the entire time.

Like the rest of the Caribbean islands, the sun is always present on Holbox. With an average temperature of 27°C, the constant breeze keeps the climate pleasant even in the hottest months. It is the perfect destination for travelers seeking to be in contact with nature and to find tranquility in a natural paradise.

Holbox is undoubtedly one of the most important ecological zones on the planet, home to numerous species of flora and fauna.

How to get there

To reach the island, you start your journey at the port of Chiquilá, where you board a shared or private boat to cross the Yalahau lagoon. By car, Holbox is located:

  • 1 hour and 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen.
  • 2 hours from Cancún.
  • 2 hours and 30 minutes from Tulum.
  • 5 hours and 30 minutes from Chetumal.

Marine life and whale sharks

The deep sea around the island is home to dolphins, manta rays, octopuses, lobsters, turtles and countless varieties of fish. The whale shark watching season runs from May 15 to September 15 and is one of the most interesting activities to do here. The island serves as a sanctuary for the whale shark, one of the most impressive and mysterious marine animals on the planet.

On the island you will also find fresh seafood directly from the sea, such as lobster. One of the local specialties is lobster pizza, which you can find at most restaurants.

Lagoons and islets to explore

Yalahau, also known as Conil Lagoon, is a body of water that separates Holbox from mainland Mexico. It is the perfect place to spend time in absolute relaxation.

Isla Pájaros is a small islet full of biodiversity. Covered in mangroves that animals use to feed, it sits inside the Yalahau lagoon. Flamingos, herons, ducks and swallows are some of the species you can encounter in this magical place.

Make a space in your itinerary to visit the pristine beaches of Isla Pasión. Dive into its waters and enjoy the sunset.

In summary

Isla Holbox is a quieter, wilder counterpoint to the rest of the Riviera Maya — a sand-road island, a whale shark sanctuary and a fragile ecosystem worth experiencing slowly and protecting carefully.
